BACOLOD City – This capital city ranked third in having the most number of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Western Visayas, according to Medical Officer IV Grace Tan, head of the Environmental Sanitation Division of the City Health Office (CHO).
Iloilo City and Iloilo province ranked first and second, respectively, Tan added.
Negros Occidental, meanwhile, ranked fourth.
However, Tan did not present figures from where she based this ranking.
She only presented data from the HIV-AIDS Core Team of the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital.
The data showed that from October 2007 to October 2017, there have been 598 recorded cases of HIV and AIDS in the province.
Tan said 304 of which are from Bacolod, currently under treatment.
But the treatment that these HIV and AIDS patients are undergoing only prevents the fast progression of the disease and not curing it Tan added.
She said everyone must observe “responsible and healthy lifestyle.”
The CHO is conducting health education drives among several establishments in the city.
Vice mayor El Cid Familairan suggested that the CHO must also hold the information campaign in villages and schools.
Familiaran said it is “important to raise the public’s awareness, especially the young ones,” about the dynamics of HIV and AIDS./PN
