BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. told Negrenses not to panic but stay alert amid the unrest of Mount Kanlaon.
“Don’t let your guards down,” Marañon said two days after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Mount Kanlaon’s alert level to 2, or “moderate level of unrest.”
Marañon said assigned agencies are monitoring the activities of the volcano, which last erupted in June 2016.
Around 8 a.m. on Friday, Phivolcs’ seismic monitoring network recorded 10 volcanic earthquakes for the past 24 hours while on Thursday, 217.
“There is probable intrusion of magma at depth which may or may not lead to a magmatic eruption,” said the latest Phivolcs bulletin.
Concerned agencies discussed with local government units (LGUs) surrounding the volcano the preparations for a possible evacuation in the event that threat rises.
The meeting was held at the conference hall of the Department of Information and Communications Technology in the city.
It was led by Jose Roberto Nuñez, head of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) in Western Visayas, and Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian, head of Negros Occidental Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Division.
Caelian said the LGUs seen to be affected already laid their evacuation plans, including the setting up of drop-off points and evacuation centers.
He added that the LGUs were instructed to submit the list of what they need to the OCD and the provincial government within the week.
Areas covered by the four-kilometer permanent danger zone are the cities of San Carlos, Bago and La Carlota and the municipalities of Murcia, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, and Salvador Benedicto. (PNA/PN)
