ILOILO City – Department of Agriculture (DA) secretary Emmanuel Piñol turned over farm machineries and equipment to farmers at the Western Visayas Integrated Agricultural Research Center (WESVIARC) in Barangay Hamungaya, Jaro district recently.
“Unless we mechanize, we will never be able to improve the productivity of our farmers,” said Piñol.
The total budget for DA’s farming modernization program next year is P5 billion, he revealed.
Prior to the turnover of farm machineries, Piñol released checks to Iloilo and Antique bulb onion and garlic farmers in Miag-ao, Iloilo.
The releases were in line with DA’s Production Loan Easy Access Program – a non-collateral credit program to help farmers buy seeds and fertilizers. It has a six percent interest rate per year.
The following were turned over to beneficiaries at WESVIARC:
* two pumps and engines for corn (P200,000)
* four-wheel drive tractors for rice (P1,250,000)
* five four-wheel tractors for corn (P12,500,000)
* 35 floating tillers for rice (P4,550,000)
* eight transplanters walk behind for rice (P3,200,000)
* 12 cultivators for high-value commercial crops (P3,000,000)
* 20 pumps and engines for rice (P2,000,000)
* 19 four-wheel drive tractors as part of DA’s Yolanda Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program (P47,500,000)
* nine pumps and engines for El Niño (P900,000)
* 20 bancas (P2,000,000)
* 3,000 bags corn seeds (P3,879,000)
* 3,000 bags hybrid seeds (P9,885,000)
* 6,000 bags of fertilizer (P5,124,000)./PN
