ILOILO City – A police officer was detained following a vehicular accident that killed a man in Barangay Sigangao, Zarraga, Iloilo.
Chief Inspector Roy Rodrigo Gutierrez, 36, was a resident of Naga City but assigned at the Human Resource and Development Division of the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) in Camp Delgado, this city.
He voluntarily surrendered to the Zarraga police after the Mitsubishi Montero Sport he was driving hit Joemarie Saeng, 29, around 7 p.m. on Nov. 15.
Saeng suddenly crossed the street and Gutierrez, who was bound for Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, failed to spot him immediately because a passenger jeepney going in the opposite director blocked the policeman’s view, according to Senior Inspector Roy Castro, Zarraga police chief.
Saeng died of fatal head injuries.
It was Gutierrez himself who alerted the police and requested for an ambulance for Saeng, said Castro.
Saeng died while being rushed to the Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital.
Castro said Gutierrez vowed to shoulder the hospital and burial expenses of Saeng once the victim’s family agreed to file an affidavit of noninterest in pursuing criminal charges against the cop./PN
