ILOILO City – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Western Visayas has started monitoring the prices of noche buena products to make sure that business establishments are complying with suggested retail prices (SRP).
Regional Director Rebecca Rascon said the DTI central office recently came out with a list of noche buena products and their SRP.
“We gave copies of the SRP to business establishments,” said Rascon.
Noche buena products DTI is monitoring include ham, fruit cocktail, cheese, mayonnaise, queso de bola, pasta, and tomato sauce, among others.
So far, said Rascon, a surfeit of competing noche buena products has tamed the prices.
“That is why indi ka kapataas presyo. Kung pataasan mo, indi mabakal kay (consumers) may choices,” said Rascon.
DTI Region 6 has so far not received complaints from consumers. It has price monitoring teams in the provinces of Iloilo, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental.
Meanwhile, to make the Ilonggos’ Christmas celebration merrier and brighter, Mayor Jose Espinosa III directed the lighting of city hall starting on Dec. 1.
At least 35 trees in Plaza Libertad and 40 trees in Jaro Plaza will also be adorned with Christmas lights.
“There will be dancing and singing of Christmas songs during the switch-on ceremony on Dec. 1. We’ll make sure the program is be exciting for the public,” said Espinosa.
Before the start of the traditional Simbang Gabi on Dec. 16, “we’ll also try to put lights in other public plazas,” he added.
Espinosa said the city government will also improve hero Graciano Lopez Jaena’s statue in Jaro Plaza next month.
Dec. 18 is Graciano Lopez Jaena Day. Various sectors have been lamenting that his monument and shrine are being desecrated. Ukay-ukay kiosks and perhayan surrounding the Lopez Jaena monument have appalled people through the years.
Lopez Jaena, born on Dec. 18, 1856 in Jaro district, is the only Ilonggo “national hero.” He was considered the “first Filipino propagandist” in the struggle for freedom from the oppressive Spanish rule./PN
