BACOLOD City – In light of the allegation that the distribution of the city government burial assistance was “uneven,” a City Budget Office official suggested raising the amount and fixing it at P3,500.
Ma. Imelda Williams made the suggestion yesterday during a public hearing on a proposed ordinance seeking to amend City Ordinance No. 384, series of 2005, “An Ordinance Establishing the Burial Financial Assistance Program for Paupers in the City of Bacolod.”
Currently the burial assistance is P1,500.
According to Williams, she noticed that some beneficiaries would get more than P1,500.
Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., author of the proposed ordinance, said the city council will have to agree on the amount.
“Many were saying that some were given P3,000, P4,000, while others get more than P5,000,” Gamboa said. “The practice is discretionary on the part of the executive. The burial assistance given out was not in uniform amount.”
According to Gamboa, he was proposing to fix the amount and establish the guidelines for the distribution.
Anyone may avail themselves of a burial assistance simply by securing a “certificate of indigency” from the barangay, he said./PN
