MANILA – Ateneo Blue Eagles is anticipating a much more physical De La Salle Green Archers in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball finals at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Archers are expected to fight for the tournament of their lives tomorrow, Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin said.
“La Salle won’t be any different on Wednesday,” said the former Gilas Pilipinas head coach. “It would be silly to think otherwise because that’s their MO, and they’re good at it.”
“We anticipated that physicality in Game 1,” he added. “You get that all the time when you play La Salle. They push the rules to the limit and they push the referees to the limit.”
Green Archers showed a glimpse of its rugged play in Game 1 last Saturday when an elbow from Cameroonian center Benoit Mbala resulted in a a cut above the left eye on Matt Nieto.
The physicality was evident when both teams called for a combined of 47 fouls.
Green Archers’ Mbala and Abu Tratter tagged with four fouls each while Blue Eagles’ George Go and Chibueze Ikeh combined for nine.
“We had a hard time with the foul situation in Game 1. I don’t think we played fluid at all. I thought it was kind of a scrappy game, and I guess in the cauldron of this whole atmosphere that can be expected from young players,” Baldwin said.
“I thought our fight, our tenacity, and our character were evident in Game 1, and I think those are big factors,” he added. “But I don’t expect we’ll have to think any differently of La Salle going to Wednesday’s game. It’s the second battle of a long war.”/PN
