MANILA – Foton Tornadoes snatched the solo lead in the Chooks To Go-Philippine Superliga Grand Prix after making a short work of Victoria Sports – UST Golden Tigresses 25-8, 25-22, 25-16 on Tuesday night at the San Juan Arena.
Import Sara Klisura and Jaja Santiago led the way with 13 points apiece, while Ennajie Laure and Christine Joy Rosario combined for 17 markers for the two-time defending champion.
Foton may have climbed up the top of the standings with a 7-1 win-loss record but it will have to wait for the outcome of the remaining matches to determine its placing in the playoffs.
“There’s nothing special about today’s match,” said Tornadoes head coach Moro Branislav. “We’re already in the top three. It’s important that we can prepare harder for the quarterfinals so we can reach the semis.”
Tornadoes waxed hot early in the opening set behind Santiago and Maika Ortiz for a 16-5 advantage. Errors by Golden Tigresses allowed Tornadoes’ lead to grow further to easily take a 1-0 set lead.
Foton maintained its aggressive play in the second set for a quick 7-1 lead. UST, however, managed to make it a close game and even took a 20-19 lead before Tornadoes leaned on Laure and Ivy Perez to snatch the set.
Tornadoes had another great start in the third with hits from Klisura, Santiago and Rosario to build a 20-9 lead. Golden Tigresses threatened to come to within single digits but Klisura came up with late conversions to close the match.
In the first game, Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors stormed back from a sluggish start and unleashed a strong finishing kick to escape with a 23-25, 22-25, 25-12, 25-23, 15-7 victory over Cocolife Asset Managers.
Bohdana Anisova erupted for 35 points – on 29 kills, four aces and two blocks – while Marisa Field chipped in 20 markers for Lady Realtors, which improved to a 2-5 win-loss slate./PN
