MANILA – Despite his subpar performance in their first two games, Andray Blatche will still be Gilas Pilipinas’ naturalized center in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
Head Coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes expects the former NBA center to bounce back during the second window of the qualification in February next year.
“I think we’ve seen the worst of Andray’s games,” Reyes said.
“But hopefully, you know, in the next window, he’s gonna be in better basketball shape. He would have been playing for a couple of months in China, so that should be able to help.
“We’re not too worried,” the national team mentor said. “We’d still rather have Andray than not have him, especially when we play the big teams. We’d still rather have Andray at this point.”
Blatche struggled with double-double 13 points and 12 rebounds during Gilas’ 77-71 win over Japan while posting mere 6 points, 14 rebounds, five blocks, and six turnovers as they defeat Chinese Taipei 90-83.
“Getting him to practice with Gilas for more than five days will help,” Reyes said. “Kung iyong tulad nito lang na ilang araw lang, it’s really hard, hindi nakatono, he’s not in sync with our little counters, the little things that we do.”
“We can’t teach everything in five days. You might be able to teach everything but to actually practice it, run it, make it instinct, you can’t get that in five days,” added the head coach. “We hope that he will come earlier in February.”/PN
