MANILA – Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz settled for a silver and bronze medal in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships on Thursday (Friday in Manila) at Anaheim, California.

Diaz, a silver medalist in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, struggled in snatch for sixth place before bouncing back in clean and jerk to finish with a bronze medal with her 199 kg total in the 53 kg division.
Thailand’s Sopita Tanasan claimed the world championship in the division after topping with a total of 201 kg, while Turkmenistan’s Kristina Shermetova finished second overall with 204 kg.
Tanasan ruled the snatch division with 96 kg lift, beating Rio Olympics gold medalist Hsu Shu-Ching of Chinese Taipei (93 kg). Diaz did not win a medal in the event after finishing at sixth place.
The Thai dominated the clean and jerk event as well with 114 kg, while Diaz and Shermetova both had 113 kg.

However, Diaz won the silver medal; she clinched the weight in her second try compared to Shermetova’s third attempt.
“I still have room for improvement but, at least, my medals here helped me remove any doubts about myself,” Diaz said. “I am determined to do better in my next performance to return to Olympics in 2020.”
Unlike other weightlifting competitions, the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships gave separate medals to top three performers in snatch, clean and jerk and on the overall performance./PN
