MANILA – After leveling the UAAP Season 80 finals series, De La Salle Green Archers is determined to go all the way in Game 3 today to keep the men’s basketball title in its backyard.
Green Archers was able to force a sudden-death match following its 92-83 victory over rival Ateneo Blue Eagles in Game 2, where the defending champion overhauled a deficit of as much as 21 points.
Bacolodnon team captain Kib Montalbo said they will not allow any chance to have a back-to-back championship slip away when they face Ateneo at 3:30 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“We worked for 10, 11 months for this (back-to-back championship), then itatapon lang namin? No way,” Montalbo said. “Hopefully we can bring the same intensity in Game 3. We will fight until the end.”
Ben Mbala said they have to keep their focus and emotions in check as they expect Game 3 to be more physical than the first two games.
“When you play Ateneo, there is no underdog. There is no one having the upper hand,” said the back-to-back MVP.
“Everyone can blow you out. Everyone can play like the champions. So when we go there, we have to give everything,” Mbala said.
“The crowd is crazy and everybody wants to win it. Everyone is diving for the ball and it’s pretty crazy,” added the Cameroonian import. “You just have to find a way to stay focused on what you have to do.”
This will be the sixth time that Green Archers and Blue Eagles are meeting in the best-of-three finale. The last time was in 2016, where La Salle claimed the title in two games./PN
