EIGHTY-FIVE runners from the Iloilo City qualifying leg will compete in the National Finals of the 41st Milo Marathon today at the Cebu Normal University.
Those who qualified for the men’s 42k race were Romnick Dago, Jero Matheus Jaro, John Onifa, Alden Doronilla, Berden Ansiong Jr., Bennie Murillo, John Jacinto, Jofel Jabagat, Nestor Salido, and Rene Ello.
On the distaff side, the qualifiers were Alexandra Ganzon, Stephanie Gadozale, Helen Ison, Marie Jayson, Ann Tubal, Jenie Estopa, Sheran Dalipe, Cheche Salcepuedes, Wilma Lugay, and Mhel Rojas.
“We wish them luck in the National Finals,” said Rommel Castro, head of Iloilo City government Sports Development Division. “The competition will be tough but I know our Ilonggo runners will give their all to keep in step with tougher runners.”
Meanwhile, there are also 31 qualifiers from the Roxas City leg led by Joel Alcorin, Rowell Hulleza, Rene Desuyo, and Joseph Emia in the men’s, and Christen Cortel, Lorena Blanco and Anita Balaga in the women’s.
Rio Olympian and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Mary Joy Tabal will be aiming for her fifth consecutive title in the women’s side while Bacolodnon Jayson Agravante hopes to retain the men’s title.
“My dream started here in Cebu and I had my first break in the Milo Marathon,” said Tabal, a Cebuana. “I want to get back to the Olympics and become one of the top female marathoners in Asia. That’s the reason I work very hard.”
Aside from Tabal, other elite runners in the women’s division are four-time champion Christabel Martes, Lizanne Abella and Ruffa Sorongon.
The men’s division will have the likes of Olympian Eduardo Buenavista, Rafael Pescos, Noel Tillor, Richard Salano, Negrense Julius Sermona, Eric Paneque, and Richel Languido./PN
