ILOILO City – Western Visayas’ indigent senior citizens who are beneficiaries of the government’s social pension program have been released P1.8 billion so far this year, according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The department as a P2.1-billion “total obligation” for the senior citizens under the program, said Gretchen Taleon, DSWD Region 6 focal person for the social pension program.

There are 365,203 Western Visayan indigent senior citizens qualified to receive a monthly pension of P500 this year.

The breakdown of pensioners per province is as follows:

* Aklan – 45,826

* Antique – 41,008

* Capiz – 55,107

* Guimaras – 14,643

* Iloilo – 160,436

* Negros Occidental – 48,183

As of Nov. 30, 213,1189 indigent senior citizen pensioners have so far received their pensions.

“We hope to fully release our total obligation before the end of this year,” said Taleon.

Only pensioners in the island-province Guimaras were so far paid completely; 14,643 beneficiaries received a total of P87.8 million.

In Iloilo province, 91 percent of pensioners received P962.6 million so far; Aklan, 91 percent (P274.9 million); Antique, 89 percent (P246 million); Capiz, 87 percent (P330.6 million); and Negros Occidental, 49 percent (P289 million)./PN
