ILOILO City – An unannounced inspection at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) prison facility in Barangay Loblob, Dumangas, Iloilo yielded no contrabands and deadly weapons.
Personnel of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and BJMP conducted the inspection around 8 a.m. on Nov. 30.
What they recovered were old playing cards and blade used in making Christmas lanterns, a yearly fund-raising endeavor of inmates.
Over 100 inmates from Iloilo province’s 4th District (made up of the municipalities of Anilao, Banate, Barotac Nuevo, Dingle, Dueñas, Dumangas, and San Enrique and the component city of Passi) were detained a t the prison facility.
PDEA regional director Wardley Getalla said the “surprise” inspection was part of their drug-clearing operations in jail facilities.
Getalla’s predecessor, Atty. Gil Pabilona, disclosed early this year that in the war against illegal drugs, jails appeared to be the “weakest link.”
It was business as usual for drug personalities detained at the Iloilo City District Jail – Male Dormitory in Barangay Ungka, Jaro district, said Pabilona.
From their cells they directed the operation of their minions outside, he revealed.
“The illegal drugs supply in Iloilo will not stop unless those people inside the jail will stop directing their people outside what to do,” stressed Pabilona.
This modus was being practiced not only at the Iloilo City District Jail – Male Dormitory but in other prison facilities of the BJMP, he said./PN
