MANILA – Shorthanded Rain or Shine Elasto Painters ruled the PBA preseason pocket tournament which ended at the Upper Deck Sports Center in Ortigas.
Despite suffering a 110-97 loss to Alaska Aces in its final match, Painters, which played without stars James Yap, Jericho Cruz, Raymond Almazan, and Anthony Washington, still topped the four-team event with 2-1 win-loss slate on Wednesday.
Aces surged to a 26-15 start with conversions from Carl Bryan Cruz, Ronald Pascual and Simon Enciso. The lead grew further to as high as 17 points at 56-39 on hits by Calvin Abueva and Jeron Teng.
Painters made its move in the third frame behind Maverick Ahanmisi, Ronnie Matias, Jewel Ponferrada, and Eduardo Daquioag to cut the deficit to 78-82 on a triple by John Karlo Casino early in the fourth quarter.
Aces, however, countered with a run on triples by Teng and Abel Gallinguez to increase the lead to 93-82. Painters had its last push at 95-99 but consecutive points by Abueva and Vic Manuel upped Aces’ lead back to 110-95.
Abueva led the way with 19 points and seven rebounds, Teng added 15 markers, while Pascual and Manuel contributed 12 markers apiece for Aces, which finished with 1-2 win-loss slate.
Meanwhile, Phoenix Fuel Masters squandered a lead as high as 19 points before hanging on to a 111-104 victory over NLEX Road Warriors to finish at second place in the three-day event.
Rookie Jason Perkins top-scored with 21 points, while Bacolodnons Jeffrei Chan and Justin Chua had 17 and 15 points, respectively, for Fuel Masters, which ended with 2-1 card./PN
