BACOLOD City – Two military men were wounded in separate firefights between the Philippine Army and members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental yesterday.
The first firefight ensued when a platoon of the Philippine Army’s 62nd Infantry Battalion (IB) led by Leiutenant John William Portillano went at around 6:30 a.m. to Sitio Cunalom, Barangay Carabalan, Himamaylan City.
The gunfight lasted for a brief moment, wounding Sergeant Jomar Dolorfino.
Another encounter happened when Portillano’s men conducted a pursuit operation in the same place around 9:30 a.m. This time, Private Jelord Para-ondan was hurt.
The encounters happened a few two days after the Philippine Army discovered an NPA encampment in Sitio Madjaha, Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City.
The encampment, which can accommodate up to 100 individuals, is used as a training site for NPA rebel forces, according to the Philippine Army.
It has two comfort rooms, 15 bunk beds and a dining hall, the Philippine Army added.
NPA members abandoned the encampment, leaving medical paraphernalia, binoculars, night vision goggle, and five pairs of civilian boots./PN
