ILOILO City – The Iloilo Esplanade was recently recognized as having the “best landscape design” by the Philippine Association of Landscape Architects (PALA) among institutional projects such as parks, plazas and esplanades.
It bested seven other finalists from among 30 entries submitted.
“The Iloilo Esplanade is a very visible initiative. It is designed well. There were challenges but after three months of designing and bidding, we were able to make it possible,” said its designer, Architect Paulo Alcazaren.
The esplanade got the nod of five judges – all professionals in landscape design and architecture in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
“The esplanade is for all Ilonggos. They just have to do their part in maintaining the cleanliness of the place,” said Alcazaren.
Other categories in the biennial competition of PALA were residential grounds, campuses, condominium facilities, and private developments.
The Iloilo Esplanade (Esplanade 1), some 1.2 kilometers long, was formally opened on Aug. 19, 2012 as part of efforts to rehabilitate the Iloilo River and enhance its tourism and economic potentials.
Built at a cost of P58.7 million, it stretched from Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue to Carpenter’s Bridge in Mandurriao district.
