CERES Negros barged into the 2017 Philippines Football League finals after edging Kaya Makati 2-1 in Leg 2 of the semifinals at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Bienvenido Marañon and Iain Ramsay fired a goal each for Ceres on Saturday night. Ceres notched an aggregate score of 3-1, including the Negrense team’s 1-0 win in Makati City on Sunday last week.
Ceres quickly raised its aggregate lead to 2-0 with Marañon heading a cross by Omid Nazari. But Kaya trimmed the deficit before the half with Antonio Ugarte scoring over Ceres goalkeeper Roland Muller.
Kaya had a chance to level the aggregate count but Jordan Mintah’s close-range shot was foiled by the defense. Ceres added on to its advantage with Ramsay converting a right foot kick over Kaya’s scrambling defense.
Meanwhile, Global completed its upset of top-seed Meralco Manila Sparks with a 1-1 draw at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. The Cebuanos clinched the semifinals series with an aggregate score of 3-2.
Meralco gained the early lead in the match on a conversion by Curt Dizon. Global retaliated in the second half with a hit from Rufino Sanchez.
With their semifinals wins, Ceres and Global punched a ticket to the AFC Cup from Jan. 22 to Oct. 27 next year.
The knockout game between Ceres and Global, as well as the battle for third place between Kaya and Meralco will be held on Dec. 16, still at the Panaad Park and Stadium./PN
