BACOLOD City – Mount Kanlaon emitted black ashes accompanied with several tremors, the Dec. 10 volcano bulletin of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) showed.
According to the reports of the Bago City and La Castellana Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Coordinating Councils, the low-energy phreatic eruption, or the steam-driven eruption, was first experienced on Dec. 9.
Yesterday, the phreatic eruption was recorded as an explosion-type earthquake that lasted for 10 minutes.
The active volcano in Negros Oriental also spewed black ashes and voluminous steam measuring up to three to four kilometers high from its summit vent, Phivolcs said.
Thin ash fall were experienced in Sitio Guintubdan, Barangay Ara-al in La Carlota City, Barangay Sag-ang in La Castellana and Barangay Ilijan in Bago City.
Ash samples were gathered in the areas to be further studied by the Phivolcs.
Mount Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2, or the moderate level of unrest.
The public is still banned from entering the areas within the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone.
On Nov. 15, Phivolcs placed Mount Kanlaon under Alert Level 2 after it recorded 279 volcanic earthquakes in the last 24 hours.
The volcanic quakes declined the following days but Phivolcs did not lower the volcano’s alert level.
Local government units in areas surrounding Mount Kanlaon have prepared themselves if ever the “worst-case scenario” happens./PN
