ILOILO City – Packed with illegal settlers and illegal structures, Budburan Creek in La Paz district is in dire need of rehabilitation.

The creek is one of the tributaries of the Iloilo River. Now heavily silted and full of garbage, it is being blamed for the constant flooding of its environs.

Budburan Creek has a total length of 1,700 meters and a width of 10 meters. It traverses barangays Mansaya, Don Esteban and Sinikway, and even parts of Lapuz district.

Due to the enormous task, the Sangguniang Panlungsod recently passed a resolution seeking help from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the clearing of Budburan Creek.

According to the city council, illegal settlers should be relocated and their illegal structures demolished.

The city government has relocation sites in Arevalo and Jaro districts.

Where to get the fund for the creek’s clearing – estimated to reach P650 million – is a concern but DPWH indicated willingness to shell out P40 million.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III hoped the clearing could start before this year is over.

Illegal settlers at the creek are estimated to be in the hundreds./PN
