CENTERPHIL Montessori Silver Knights captured the 1st Governor’s Cup Regional Invitational Championships title after a 75-65 win over Hercor College Junior Jaguars in the knockout finals Monday night at the Iloilo Sports Complex in Iloilo City.
Patrick John Gain spearheaded that barrage of scoring for CenterPhil with 33 points. He was later hailed the Tournament Most Valuable Player. Ian Carl Gasacao and Lester Valn Paraico had 14 markers each.
The victory also gave Silver Knights the slot to represent Visayas in the Breakdown Basketball National Games in Manila.
“I’m glad with our performance in the Governor’s Cup,” said CenterPhil owner Mark Plagata Palabrica. “We also look forward to play in Manila, where we can gain a lot of experience playing the tough teams.”
After the tightly contested first three quarters, Silver Knights pulled away in the fourth on three straight outside shots by Gain to build its largest lead at 21 points.
Hercor College tried to launch a huge fight-back midway in the final quarter with its own 3-point baskets but Silver Knights tightened its defense in the end to claim the championship.
Meanwhile, University of San Agustin leaned on the hot hands of Luin Sanchez to salvage a third place finish with an 88-70 domination over Iloilo South Selection.
In women’s volleyball, Central Philippine University Golden Lions bagged the crown after a straight-set win over Iloilo Lady Defenders. Iloilo City National High School took the bronze medal by beating Guimaras./PN
