ILOILO City – Missing since Dec. 19, a 33-year-old resident of Gigantes Island in Carles, Iloilo remains to be found.
Johncel Condello disappeared in the rough seas of Carles after the motorboat he was riding capsized morning on Tuesday.
As of this writing, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Iloilo was scouring the area where the boat capsized – the waters off Sitio Nabunut, Carles.
According to PCG-Iloilo’s Lieutenant Commander Ramil Palabrica, the ill-fated motorboat “Chakchak” was transporting 15 boxes of crushed ice from the mainland. It capsized before reaching Nabunut Island.
Condello was one of the boat’s crew. His two other companions managed to survive – Ricky Bolahado, 18, and Rowel Mahusay 22.
The waves were big and the wind strong, they told coastguards.
Bolahado and Mahusay were rescued by a passing motorboat around 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
“PCG advised all nearby coastal barangays and all motorboats to be on the lookout for Condello,” said Palabrica.
The capsized boat was owned by Fernan Hermogila.
In another development, Palabrica said PCG-Iloilo was coordinating with the Office of Civil Defense once more for the possible strike of tropical depression “Vinta.”
“Vinta” strengthened as it neared Mindanao yesterday, threatening to dump rains over the country’s southern region during the Christmas weekend, according to the state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
The storm packs maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour.
PCG-Iloilo also activated its Oplan Ligtas Biyahe in preparation for the surge of boat passengers this Christmas and New Year./PN
