UNIVERSITY of the Philippines Lady Maroons expressed interest in recruiting Marianne Sotomil when she finishes her studies at Bacolod Tay Tung High School, where she currently plays for the Thunderbolts volleyball team.
There was still no agreement between Lady Maroons and Sotomil, a native of Pavia, Iloilo, but the university invited her and the entire Thunderbolts to visit them, said Jose Montalbo, Tay Tung’s vice president for sports.
UP Lady Maroons “wanted to recruit Marianne (Sotomil) to play for them in the UAAP,” Montalbo told Panay News. “But, as far as I know, there are no final words yet.”
“But, of course, we are not blocking the way if ever some of our players are recruited to play in Manila,” he added. “In fact, it will be an honor for Bacolod Tay Tung and its volleyball program.”
Sotomil may have caught the attention of UP Lady Maroons when she played for Thunderbolts in the Rebisco Girls Volleyball League last month at the Santa Rosa Sports Complex in Laguna.
If ever Sotomil pushes through with her transfer, she will be the third Western Visayas player in Lady Maroons, alongside Arielle Estranero and Jessma Ramos, who were both from Bacolod City.
Montalbo disclosed that several Manila-based colleges and universities were trying to reach out to their other graduating players.
“I have graduating players who are under negotiation with some colleges and universities in Manila,” said Montalbo.
“They have the freedom to choose, but if they remain in Bacolod City, they will have no problem with their scholarship,” he added./PN
