KALIBO, Aklan – The Philippine Coast Guard is closely monitoring the influx of passengers at ports during what it calls the “Christmas exodus.”
All Coast Guard stations and detachments are on heightened alert for Oplan Biyaheng Ayos that started on Dec. 18 and ends on Jan. 8.
In Aklan, coastguards were mobilized to intensify the inspection of all passengers and their baggage at the Caticlan and Cagban ports.
They will conduct routine and random inspections of roll-on, roll-off vessels and other ships bound for Mindoro, Batangas and Romblon, and will particularly look into compliance with safety standards.
Moreover, the Coast Guard will check for possible bombs, explosives, and fireworks and other flammable items on board vessels, aside from holding surveillance and seaborne patrols.
Passenger Assistance Center, or PAC, booths will be set up at ports, too.
The Coast Guard is tasked to monitor the movement of all vessels in ports and harbors, designate security zones for maritime security purposes, enforce ports’ and ships’ identification systems, regulate access to ports, vessels and waterfront facilities, and inspect cargoes to prevent the transport of contraband.
As of Dec. 20 the agency has monitored 88,500 outbound passengers in ports and piers. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
