ILOILO – The provincial government aims to eliminate malnutrition among children in the next two years.
During the recent “1st Pasidungog sa Nutrisyon” program at Casa Real de Iloilo, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. said programs and interventions are being implemented to save children from malnutrition.
“We are working very hard to address the problem and ensure that we improve in all our efforts,” he said.
Data from the Provincial Health Office (PHO) showed that incidence of malnutrition in the province is declining.
PHO chief Dr. Patricia Grace Trabado said the malnutrition prevalence rate in Iloilo had been dropping – 8.56 percent in 2012; 6.97 percent in 2013; 6.95 percent in 2014; 5.16 percent in 2015; and 4.70 percent in 2016.
“We are seeing a lot of nutrition initiatives and innovations from municipalities down to the barangay level,” she said.
Iloilo province ranks fourth in incidences of malnutrition in Western Visayas.
“We are targeting to be a malnutrition-free province two years from now,” said Trabado.
The provincial government has been introducing programs anchored on Republic Act 10410 or the “Early Years Act of 2013” which provides for holistic care for young children in the crucial stage of development.
The law brings together all government agencies down to the barangay level to provide for the basic needs of children ages zero to eight – considered to be the first crucial stage of educational development. (PIA-Iloilo)/PN
