MANILA – Senators wanted hotel and restaurant workers, among others, to be given all the service charges that their establishments collect.

Employees currently get 85 percent of the service charges while 15 percent goes to the management.

Nakakalungkot isipin na ang dami nating nakukuha na report na minsan nagiging baliktad pa – 15 percent napupunta sa employees, 85 percent napupunta sa employer, tapos minsan nagiging full discretion pa ng employer,” said Joel Villanueva, author of Senate Bill No. 1299.

Senate Bill No. 1299, or the “Act Providing that 100% of the Service Charge Collected in Hotels and Other Establishments Be Distributed to All Covered Employees and for Other Purposes,” was approved on third and final reading on Dec. 11.

Villanueva, chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development, said the current sharing distribution has not changed since it was legalized in 1975.

Villanueva said the employer’s portion was supposed to be a compensation for breakages or losses, but if there was no damage/loss, the management may distribute the 15 percent to managerial employees.

“Minsan wala namang nasisira, wala namang nababasag, pero ’di nila ito binibigay sa empleyado,” the senator said.

“’Di ka naman papasok sa negosyo ng restaurant o hotel na para ang pagdiskitahan mo na kikitain ay galing sa service charge,” he added. “Ibigay na ho natin ito, maliit lang ito na tulong sa ating manggagawa.”/PN
