23 teams vie for golds in Leon volleyball

TWENTY-THREE teams – 16 in the men’s category and seven in women’s – will compete in the 2017 Open Invitational Volleyball Cup from Dec. 26 to 29 in Leon, Iloilo.

Alma Cagalitan Capilastique of the Leon Volleyball Association (LEVA) said the men’s teams were divided into four groups while the women’s teams will play in a single round-robin.

In men’s Bracket A were San Miguel, Tigbauan, University of San Agustin, and Lambunao while in Bracket B were Mandurriao Volleyball Club, Pavia, Virgen, and Western Institute of Technology.

Bracket C comprised Metrograde, Leon B, Central Philippine University, and Cabatuan, while Bracket D was composed of Maasin, Alimodian, Leon A, and Iloilo Doctors’ College.

Playing in the women’s division were Leon, University of San Agustin, Team Limitless (Buncag), Cabatuan, John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University, and Central Philippine University Teams A and B.

“In the men’s category, the teams will first play among their group mates. Then the top four in each group will advance to the semis,” Capilastique said.

The same number of women’s teams will reach the semifinals after the single round-robin battles, she added.

The matches, which will be held simultaneously at three separate venues, will start at 9 a.m. Participants will assemble at 7 a.m. while the parade of teams and the opening ceremonies will be at 8 a.m./PN
