SEVEN referees with roots in Western Visayas were among the 12 Filipinos named as part of the FIFA 2018 Refereeing International Lists.

Members of the FIFA Refereeing International Lists are qualified to officiate in international games.

Based on the list released by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF), four of the 12 qualified Filipino referees traced their roots to Iloilo City and three, to Bacolod City.

Among the Ilonggos were FIFA referee Steve Supresencia (since 2011), FIFA Women’s referee Jhesa Mae Kaatz (new), and FIFA assistant referees Kent Gobuyan (since 2012) and Francis Engalgado (new).

Bacolodnon referees who made the Federation Internationale de Football Association list were referees Linjun Talaver (since 2016) and Emmanuel Elloso (since 2014) and assistant referee Giovanni Lachica (new).

Other Filipino officials in the 2018 list were FIFA referee Clifford Daypuyat (since 2014), FIFA assistant referees Relly Balila (since 2015) and Krizmark Nañola (since 2017), FIFA Futsal referee Rey Ritaga (since 2006), and FIFA Women’s assistant referee Merlo Albano (since 2012).

“We would like to congratulate all 12 Filipino referees who were nominated by PFF and have been included in the FIFA 2018 Refereeing International Lists,” said PFF secretary-general Edwin Gastanes.

“Their acceptance to the list should serve as inspiration to other young and promising Filipino football referees who aspire to be a FIFA referee in the future,” Gastanes said./PN
