ARNEL MANDAL of Iloilo City spearheaded the Philippine wushu team’s campaign in the 2017 Asian Cup Sanda Championship after winning a gold medal in the men’s 52kg event earlier this month.
Defeating India, Hong Kong and Vietnam, the Ilonggo dominated the fight at the Guangzhou Polytechnic Sports Gymnasium in China and brought home $1,500.
The 21-year-old Mandal have also received a P35,000 cash incentive from Iloilo City mayor Jose Espinosa III during a recognition ceremony at the Plaza Libertad outside city hall on Wednesday.
“We must celebrate having competent athletes like them. May they continue to give honor and pride to the city,” said Espinosa.
“They are good role models to the other athletes. They deserve to be given recognition,” the mayor added.
Also winning a gold medal for the Philippine wushu team was Divine Wally, who stamped class in the women’s 48kg category, beating opponents from South Korea and Vietnam.
Hergie Bacyadan bagged the delegation’s only silver medal in men’s 65kg while Clemente Tabugara Jr. and Carlos Baylon finished with a bronze each in men’s 65kg and men’s 56kg.
The Asian Cup Sanda Championship served as the Philippine team’s preparation for the 2018 Asian Games from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2 in Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia./PN
