BACOLOD City – Police in Negros Occidental were keeping an eye on firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices prohibited by law.
Anyone manufacturing and using them will be held to account, according to Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Castil, provincial police director.
Castil said they will enforce safety guidelines on the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices during New Year revelries.
Police, the Department of Health, the Bureau of Fire Protection, and other concerned agencies were campaigning for the prevention of injuries and damage to properties due to firecrackers.
Their operations, according to Castil, will be based on Executive Order No. 28, issued by President Rodrigo Duterte, and the 2012 revised Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act 7183.
These policies regulate the sale, manufacture, distribution, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices.
Negros Occidental has 51 “designated firecracker zones” – the only areas where firecrackers may be lighted. This capital city has 65, police records showed.
With firecracker use not prohibited altogether, the Negros Occidental police urged the public to use safe merrymaking instruments and alternative noisemakers in greeting the New Year.
Those who could not help but use firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices must handle them responsibly, Castil stressed. For children, strict guidance from parents is required, he added.
Moreover, police will closely monitor the use of firearms during the revelries as they aim for zero stray bullet injuries and deaths.
Anyone, including uniformed personnel, who will indiscriminately fire guns will face appropriate charges, police said./PN
