ILOILO City – Many vendors were not aware that some firecrackers have been banned.
Policemen inspected firecracker stalls in this city yesterday and confiscated several firecrackers.
“Halos lahat ang sabi sa atin hindi daw nila alam. But we did not consider it an excuse so confiscated pa rin,” said Chief Superintendent Cesar Hawthorne Binag, regional police director.
The government has banned following firecrackers: piccolo or scratch bangers, pop pop, Goodbye Philippines or crying bading, Yolanda or Goodbye Napoles, pla-pla, giant kuwitis, watusi or dancing firecrackers, super lolo, atomic big trianggulo, mother rockets, lolo thunder, pillbox, boga, big Judah’s belt, big bawang, kwiton, Bin Laden, kabasi, atomic bomb, five star, og, and giant whistle bombs.
All firecrackers with gunpowder exceeding two grams or 1.3 teaspoons are banned, too.
Binag also observed that some vendors did not have plastic covers over their firecrackers to shield these from direct sun exposure.
The plastic cover is a must, he reminded the vendors, “kasi puwede siyang mag-cause ng spark.”
The inspections were held on two firecracker selling zones identified by the city government – on the corner of Circumferential Road 1 and Jocson Street, Arevalo district and the corner of Circumferential Road 1 and Iloilo East Coast-Capiz highway in the vicinity of Ondoy’s Sugbahan in Barangay Buhang, Jaro district.
Only the following firecrackers can be sold: baby rocket, bawang, small triangle, pulling of strings, paper caps, el diablo, and sky rocket (kwitis), sparklers, luces, fountains, jumbo regular and special, mabuhay, Roman candle, trompillo, airwolf, whistle device, and butterfly.
In Executive Order No. 151-2017 issued on Dec. 22, Iloilo City’s Mayor Espinosa required firecracker vendors to meet the following requirements:
* Each stall must have “No Testing” and “No Smoking” tarpaulin signs bearing the telephone numbers of the Bureau of Fire Protection.
* Cooking is prohibited inside firecracker stalls.
* All displayed firecrackers/fireworks must have plastic cover.
* Only LED lights are allowed in the stalls.
* Electrical outlets are prohibited.
* Each stall must have at least one fire extinguisher./PN
