ILOILO City – While Ilonggos were busy welcoming 2018, a vehicular accident killed two men and injured two others at the circumferential road in Barangay Tacas, Jaro district.
Around midnight of the New Year, a white Toyota Innova (plate number FGM-798) fell into a roadside ditch some five feet deep then smashed against a concrete fence of a residential subdivision.
The 31-year-old driver Robert Villamor and 36-year-old Jay Patrick Tacbo both of Barangay Tabucan, Mandurriao district died of severe head injuries.
Their two companions survived the crash but were injured. Ivan Niel Buyco, 28, of Pavia, Iloilo was taken to the Iloilo Mission Hospital while Michael Montelibano, 38, of Mandurriao was rushed to the West Visayas State University Medical Center.
The men were from Barangay Buhang, Jaro and bound for Pavia, according to Inspector Victor Legaspi, traffic officer of the Iloilo City Police Office.
“Perhaps the vehicle was running very fast and the driver lost control of it,” said Legaspi.
The road was slippery, added Legaspi, noting that it rained earlier that night.
The vehicle went over the circumferential road’s curb and vaulted into the air before falling into the ditch and smashing against the concrete fence Green Meadow subdivision.
A curb is the edge where a raised sidewalk meets the roadway.
“The investigation is ongoing. We want to know what really happened,” said Legaspi.
Probers would also check if the driver was driving under the influence of liquor.
