MANILA – Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings turned its game just in time to score a come-from-behind 104-97 victory against GlobalPort Batang Pier in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Trailing 96-98 with over two minutes left in the game, Kings came up with a 9-1 scoring run behind Japeth Aguilar, Aljon Mariano, Scottie Thompson, and Greg Slaughter to fend off the decimated Batang Pier on Sunday night.
Aguilar led Ginebra with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks. Slaughter added 18 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocks, and Tenorio 17 points for Kings to join San Miguel Beermen on top (2-0).
Despite their victory Kings head coach Tim Cone was not pleased with the performance of the squad that missed the services of the injured Joe Devance, Arthur Dela Cruz and Solomon Mercado.
“We kind of just stole the game,” said Cone. “They feel they can just show up and win. They don’t really play until they really have to.”
“I’m disturbed. I think we can do away with that,” Cone added. “This is something we have to get better at. We have to fire away right away.”
It was a seesaw battle for both teams in the first two quarters before Batang Pier gained the lead 72-63 in the third. Kings answered with a run early in the fourth behind Slaughter and Mark Caguioa to come to within 81-82.
GlobalPort pulled away again 91-86 before Kings had another rally behind Tenorio and Aguilar for a 95-93 edge. Batang Pier surged for the last time 96-95 after a Stanley Pringle triple before Kings ended the match with the 9-1 charge.
Sean Anthony top-scored with 29 points while Pringle flirted with a triple double (27 points, 10 assists and 8 rebounds) for Batang Pier, which slid to 0-2./PN
