XLII. OFFER
He came home feeling like a complete failure, with a sense of surrender. And now, Lady Luck seemed to smile on him. A possibility of love, and the promise of the elusive career.
*
Matt was greeted by a gay make-up artist, flamboyant, loud, funky like Lady Gaga, who sat him on a stool, started to apply make up on him, slapped a fistful of gel on his hair.
A suit-wearing, cigar-puffing record producer, stern, business-like, pudgy, approached Matt without paying attention to the gay make-up artist who went on with what he was doing with Matt’s hair.
Mateo Feliciano?
Matt made an effort to stand and offer his hand, but the record producer signalled him to sit down, do away with formalities.
*
Look, Matt. I saw your performance last night, and I was impressed.
I want to sign you up for a recording contract.
I think you have real talent.
If you accept my offer, I want you to relocate in Manila immediately. Have we got a deal?
Matt was too excited to say anything. Mr. Tan…
*
Mr. Tan appeared to be a very busy man.
He had no time for hesitant talents.
I’m extending to you an offer of a lifetime.
I can make you big.
But I need your commitment. What do you say? the producer recapitulated.
The make-up artist could not stop himself, What are you waiting for? Just say yes.
Mr. Record Producer extended his hand.
*
Matt stood up, took it, shook on the deal.
Yes! said Matt. Thank you, Mr. Tan. Thank you very much.
My secretary will be in touch with you soon.
Meanwhile, I want you to give your contact information to my assistant. Congratulations, Matt! and nodding in the direction of the crowd, he added, Now, make me proud.
An assistant, in polo barong, approached Matt, got his contact number as the record producer left puffing his cigar. (To be continued)/PN
