Magnolia keeps Road Warriors at bay, 105-94
MANILA – Ilonggo rookie Kiefer Ravena scored career-best 31 points but these were no match to Magnolia’s late-game rally.
Paul Lee top-scored with 21 points – 12 coming in the third quarter – as Hotshots fended off numerous runs by NLEX Road Warriors to score a 105-94 victory in the PBA Philippine Cup.
Rome dela Rosa added 14 markers while Robbie Herndon and Aldrech Ramos had 11 points each to help Hotshots improve to a 3-1 win-loss record during the Sunday night game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“It’s all about our effort, especially in the second half,” Hotshots head coach Chito Victolero said. “We just tried to be mentally tough sa dulo.”
Ravena also posted four rebounds, five assists and four steals, while JR Quinahan added double-double 22 points and 10 rebounds for Road Warriors, which dropped to a 2-2 card.
“We knew NLEX can come back anytime. We also tried to stop Kiefer (Ravena) pero nakagawa siya ng paraan,” Victolero said.
Hotshots zoomed to an 18-5 start on 9 early points by Herndon. Road Warriors answered with a run to come to within 12-18 but Hotshots countered with its own rally for a 30-16 lead on 5 straight points from Peter June Simon.
Magnolia continued its hot shooting in the second frame for a 36-20 lead on back-to-back hits by Ramos. NLEX turned to Ravena to trim the deficit 43-51 at the half.
Hotshots started to pull away anew in the third quarter with 3 outside shots from Lee and inside conversions from Justin Melton, Ian Sangalang and Dela Rosa to widen the lead to its largest at 23 points.
Road Warriors came up with a last push in the final quarter to come to within 79-87 on a triple by Kevin Alas. Conversions from Jio Jalalon, Dela Rosa and Marc Pingris raised Hotshots’ lead to 105-87 with two minutes left in the match./PN
