ILOILO City – Contesting tribes in the upcoming Dinagyang Festival have so far been released a total of P11 million in financial subsidy.
According to the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc. (IDFI), 10 tribes in the ati-ati competition each received P750,000 while 10 more in the Kasadyahan regional festival contest each got P350,000.
IDFI has allotted a subsidy of P15 million for the tribes this year (P10 million for the ati-ati contest and P5 million for the Kasadyahan).
The remaining subsidy would be released several days prior to the competition dates (Jan. 27 for the Kasadyahan and Jan. 28 for ati-ati tribes contest).
IDFI also pegged the total contest cash prizes this year at P3,409,750.
Friday last week, competing ati-ati tribes gave a preview of their performance during the Dinagyang opening salvo. They were the Salognon of Jaro National High School, Paghidaet of La Paz National High School, Obreros of Bo. Obrero National High School, Ilonganon of Jalandoni National High School, Dagatnon of Ramon Avanceña National High School, Panayanon of Iloilo City National High School , Buntatalanit of Tiu Cho Teg Ana Ros Foundation Integrated School, Pan-ay of Fort San Pedro National High School, Amihan of Mandurriao National High School, and Tapasnon from Tapaz, Capiz.
IDFI chairman Ramon Cua Locsin promised a “genuine, world-class event any Ilonggo can be proud of.”
The competing groups/festivals in the Kasadyahan are Pintaflores of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental; Tinabuay of Murcia of Negros Occidental; Banigan of Libertad, Antique; Binagtong sang Manggahan of Nueva Valencia, Guimaras; Mangunguma (Manggahan Festival), San Lorenzo, Guimaras; ManughabolkangSalakayan of Miag-ao, Iloilo; Pantat of Zarraga, Iloilo; Tultugan of Maasin, Iloilo; Haw-as of Dumangas, Iloilo; and Kaing of Leon, Iloilo.
This year’s celebration will be grander than those of previous years, said Ma. Luisa Segovia, vice chairperson of IDFI.
Dinagyang started in 1968 when a replica of Señor Santo Niño de Cebu was brought to Iloilo City by Fr. Sulpicio Enderes, OSA and the Cofradia de Cebu. The image was enthusiastically received by the Ilonggos who danced on the streets to the tune of rumbling drums./PN
