BACOLOD City – There is a lack of sugarcane plantation workers, especially cutters, in Negros Occidental, according to Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.
This hurts the sugar industry in the province, Marañon said, citing complaints from sugarcane farm owners.
The farm owners said their scheduled harvests were delayed.
“Even the importation of sugar migrant workers known as sacadas cannot suffice the huge demand for sugarcane cutters,” Marañon said.
This does not worry the governor, though.
Marañon said the shortage in the number of sugarcane farmers is a sign that there is massive infrastructure development in the province.
These infrastructure projects create more job opportunities for Negrenses, added Marañon.
He said it’s either the sugarcane workers are opting to work in the construction industry or their children have landed jobs in business process outsourcing companies where they are compensated well.
Marañon believes that for the sugar industry to survive, it must invest in mechanization.
“Mechanization is the answer to the declining number of workers in the sugar industry – from planting, fertilization and harvest,” he said./PN
