SANTA Clarita International High School Primes and Hua Siong College of Iloilo cruised to easy victories at the start of the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) Iloilo leg qualifier at the Powerhouse Gym in Gaisano City Iloilo.
Led by mainstays Ralph Bajon, Marvin Cuerbo, Giann Paul Nahine, and Franc Steven Tono, Primes began its campaign on Friday with an 82-65 win against Mandurriao National High School.
“Good start for us,” said Primes head coach Rodel Camacho. “We were able to dictate the tempo early so noong nakita ko na malaki na iyong lead noong fourth (quarter), I decided to try our other players to give them confidence.”
Hua Siong, the Iloilo Schools Sports Council Meet champion, opened the tournament on a bright note with a 110-67 rout of the Filipino-American School Town. Mark Nonoy and Binoy Beliran led the charge for Hua Siong.
CenterPhil Montessori Silver Knights, meanwhile, survived a tough stand by Iloilo National High School before scoring a 73-70 win while St. Robert’s International Academy defeated John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University 84-54.
Also winning their opening day matches were Sun Yat Sen High School, which dominated Paref Westbridge 95-54, and University of San Agustin, which mauled Assumption Passi 84-57.
Tournament commissioner Joe-An Tenorio said the champion school will represent Iloilo in the NBTC Regional Tournament, which will be held on Feb. 23 to 24 in Guimaras./PN
