Panayanon foils rival’s three-peat dream
ILOILO City – There was no three-peat victory for last year’s Dinagyang Festival ati-ati tribes champion Tribu Salognon of Jaro National High School.
Last night, Tribu Panayanon of Iloilo City National High School was crowned the champion once again, two years after Tribu Salognon dethroned it in the 2016 edition of the festival.
It was a sweet revenge of sort for Panayanon that embarrassingly lost its championship title in 2016 because of violations in the measurement of props used.
Panayanon also bagged a slew of minor awards in this year’s golden or 50th year of Dinagyang– best in music, choreography and performance.
The victory earned for Panayanon the right to represent Dinagyang Festival and Iloilo City this summer in the 2018 Aliwan Fiesta in Metro Manila – an annual competition of the country’s best festivals.
Last night, the 2018 Dinagyang champion was also invited by the Philippine Independence Day Council to perform in New York, USA when the Filipino community there marks this June the country’s Independence Day.
Panayanon choreographer Romel Flogen said they certainly learned their lessons from their 2016 defeat.
Flogen bagged a special award (best choreographer) last night. It was vindication for him who, two years ago, had to humbly explain there was no deliberate intention to violate the rules and guidelines of the ati tribes competition on the prescribed dimensions of risers used during their performance.
“Misinterpretation” of the guidelines was how Flogen put it then.
Flogen steered Panayanon to three straight Dinagyang victories in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Last night’s win was his fourth with the tribe.
Last year, Panayanon tried to redeem itself but fell short and settled for first runner-up honors to eventual back-to-back champion Salognon. Still, Flogen was declared the best among his peers.
In a reversal of fortune this year, Salognon was declared first runner-up.
But while it failed to secure three successive wins, Salognon copped three minor awards – best in discipline, costume and street-dancing.
In the Kasadyahan regional festival contest, Hubon Mangunguma of San Lorenzo Guimaras bested nine other local festivals/contingents. Curiously, its choreographer was Flogen, too.
