KALIBO, Aklan – The Sangguniang Bayan of Malay considers increasing the environmental fee for tourists entering the Caticlan jetty port, the main jump-off point to the world-famous Boracay Island.
Currently, tourists are paying a P75 environmental fee and P100 terminal fee.
A municipal ordinance exempts Aklanons from paying the environmental and other admission fees.
The environmental fees collected at Caticlan jetty port are exclusively used for environmental programs and projects in Malay, Aklan.
Last year, the island accommodated 1,052,975 foreign tourists, mostly Chinese and Korean inbound travelers.
Councilor Maylynn Aguirre-Graf said the heavy influx of tourists in the island may lead to environmental concerns, thus the hike in the environmental fee from P75 to P100.
Graf also reiterated her proposal to distribute eco-friendly bags to tourists.
“It is high time to introduce the municipality of Malay to the world, not only Boracay Island, through the eco-bags to the visitors,” Graf said.
Councilor Dante Pagsuguiron supported the environmental fee hike.
