MANILA – Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III has stressed that the Senate cannot issue digital currency.
Pimentel made the clarification in light of claims that the Digital Currency Co. Ltd. (DCC) had partnered with the Senate for the release of the digital currency Philippine Global Coin.
The DCC, according to the Senate president, used his photos to back up its claim.
“There is no partnership between me and the DCC or the Senate and the DCC,” Pimentel said on Monday.
“I am shocked at their bold claims of an agreement between us using pictures that politicians normally have with visitors,” he said.
Pimentel stressed that he met with the DCC “as a matter of courtesy to visitors.”
The Senate cannot release any currency, a mandate of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, he clarified.
He also warned overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to be vigilant of such misrepresentation attempts.
“I ask our OFWs to be wary of those who use the names of government officials and institutions in investment schemes,” Pimentel said.
“The government will never engage in activities that will profit off their sacrifices and hard work,” he added. “Always check with the Philippine Embassy to verify claims of this nature.”/PN
