ILOILO City – The City Health Office (CHO) recorded a significant drop in the number of “severely underweight” children last year.

At the beginning of 2017, CHO reported 1,107 “severely underweight” children. By December, this dropped to 273.

“Based on our 2017 baseline data, almost 75 percent of the children improved from being malnourished and did not undergo feeding program,” said City Health Officer Dr. Bernard Caspe.

The CHO conducted an Operation Timbang weighing program to children aged zero to seven years old at the start of the year.

Children identified as severely underweight underwent feeding for six months.

“Every morning we feed these children with nutritious food with the help of barangay nutrition scholars assigned in the field. We also encourage our barangay officials to do the same and to support the program,” said Caspe.

The CHO chief said the challenge is to ensure that the children are provided with nutritious food such as vegetables, milk and fish by their parents at home.

“We provide one meal for the children but the two other meals are given by their parents at home that is why before we are done with the six-month feeding program, we also talk to the parents on how they can prepare healthy food with minimum budget,” said Caspe.
