MANILA – Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws came up with a huge shocker in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball after a 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9 win over Ateneo Lady Eagles at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Negrense Bernadeth Pons posted triple-double 14 points, 13 digs and 16 excellent receptions, while Toni Rose Basas had 14 markers, including six service aces, for Lady Tamaraws on Sunday night.
With the victory, Lady Tamaraws joined two-time defending champion De La Salle University Lady Spikers, National University Lady Bulldogs and University of the Philippines Lady Maroons on top (1-0).
“Sa amin it’s ano ’to pampa-high morale sa mga players kasi knowing Ateneo ang tinalo namin,” said Lady Tamaraws head coach George Pascua. “Kilala ko ang players na ’yan pagdating sa maturity alam nila i-handle.”
Lady Eagles had a strong start in the fifth set to take a 6-1 advantage. Lady Tamaraws got a break on Lady Eagles’ errors to tie the match at 7-all. Lady Eagles surged to a 9-7 edge but Lady Tamaraws quickly tied it up.
From there, it was all Lady Tamaraws on conversions by Basas and Pons and three straight errors by Lady Eagles to tally its first opening day victory in UAAP in four seasons.
Jhoanna Maraguinot came through with 21 points, including 19 attacks, while Katrina Tolentino chipped in 14 markers for Lady Eagles (0-1)./PN
