Barroca posts 17, leads Hotshots to PH Cup semis
MANILA – Magnolia Hotshots erased an early 20-point deficit and proceeded to defeat GlobalPort Batang Pier 86-79 in the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals last night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Andy Mark Barroca made 17 points while Paul Lee posted double-double 14 points and 13 rebounds for Hotshots to advance to the semifinals against the winner of the NLEX Road Warriors-Alaska Aces series.
Batang Pier had a strong start in the opening quarter to take a 26-6 lead on early conversions by Stanley Pringle. Hotshots got hits from Peter June Simon and Ian Sangalang to cut the deficit 12-26.
Hotshots continued its run in the second frame behind Barroca, Lee and Rodney Brondial to come to within 33-36 but consecutive triples by Batang Pier gave them a 45-34 halftime lead.
Batang Pier was still up early in the third period when Hotshots countered with a huge run from Barroca, Lee and Aldrech Ramos to snatch the lead 54-53. This grew further to 6 on inside baskets from Sangalang and Jio Jalalon.
Hotshots went on to build its largest lead at 12 points in the fourth, and then Batang Pier made its last push to get close 76-80. Free throws from Marc Pingris, Lee and Barroca sealed the win for Hotshots.
Pringled led the way with double-double 31 points and 10 rebounds while Terrence Romeo added 14 markers for Batang Pier./PN
