MANILA – The government will file new plunder charges against officials of the previous administration over the Metro Rail Transit 3.
“There was a decision that cases will be pursued [against] those behind the miserable performance of MRT 3,” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said on Tuesday.
In November 2017 the Department of Transportation filed plunder complaints against nine members of the Benigno Aquino III cabinet over the alleged anomalous contract for the maintenance of MRT-3.
According to Roque, the problems plaguing the rail system lie with not only the former maintenance provider Busan Universal Rail, Inc. but also the current owners of MRT-3.
“The President (Rodrigo Duterte) asked Solicitor General (Jose) Calida to look further into this matter,” Roque said.
Meanwhile the Malacañang official said a “change of ownership” of the MRT is seen as a long-term solution to the problems with the rail system.
“As you know, the ownership of MRT-3 is a private corporation. So, they are thinking of changing the owners, because we have had many problems with the current owners,” Roque said.
A change of ownership is expected to happen before the Duterte administration ends, said the spokesman.
“There were timetables presented to the Cabinet. There are already unsolicited proposals, and there will be an award to be made soon,” he said./PN
