MANILA – Global Cebu FC continued to struggle in the 2018 AFC Cup Group stage after a 3-0 defeat to Yangon United FC at the Thuwanna Youth Training Center in Myanmar.

After that second defeat in three matches, the Cebu-based squad remained at the tail-end of Group G with 1 point but still has three games left in its schedule to try and catch up.

Sekou Sylla proved to be the thorn on the side of Global Cebu – his former team – as he scored twice in the second half to lead the way for the host team on Wednesday. The other goal came from Lwin Maung Maung.

Global Cebu had chances early in the match to take the lead – Dominic del Rosario and Darryl Roberts attempted but misfired. Yangon finally took the lead just before halftime break on a Lwin conversion.

After the break, it was Sylla’s turn to create damage for Yangon as he scored off a header from Lwin’s cross in the 48th minute before going solo nine minutes later for a 3-0 edge.

“We need to score goals and we need to win all our remaining matches to advance,” said Global Cebu head coach Marjo Allado. “I am still hopeful of our chances. All is not lost.”

Global Cebu will return to action on March 13 to face Yangon United once again at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium./PN
