BACOLOD City – The City Health Office (CHO) is monitoring the status of individuals who were given a shot of the controversial anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia in the city.
Medical Officer IV Grace Tan, head of the Environmental Sanitation Division of the City Health Office, said they have so far listed nine persons – mostly students – who were administered with Dengvaxia by some private doctors in the city.
Dengvaxia’s manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur disclosed in December last year that it could worsen symptoms for people who had not previously been infected with the denguevirus.
Tan yesterday encouraged others who have also got a shot of the vaccine to come to the CHO to get their status checked.
The CHO is making a master list of individuals who were vaccinated with Dengvaxia after the Department of Health(DOH) ordered it to do so.
Meanwhile, the number of dengue cases in the city dropped 33.3 percent during the period January to March 10 this year.
CHO records showed that there were 144 cases of dengue in the cityduring the period, lower compared to 216 cases in the same period last year.
Two people in the city died due to dengue during the period last yearwhile this year, only one.
Barangays with the most number of dengue cases were Sum-ag, Singcang-Airport, Taculing, Villamonte, Handumanan, Alijis, Mansilingan, Tangub, Mandalagan, and Pahanocoy, the CHO records further showed.
Aside from keeping the surroundings clean, Tan said everybody must also observe the 4S against dengue: Searching and destroying mosquito breeding sites, self-protection measures, seeking early consultation, and saying no to indiscriminate fogging.
Dengue, a mosquito-borne disease, infects 400 million people each year and kills 9,000 globally, according to the DOH, citing World Health Organization data.
The Philippines has one of the highest dengue fatality rates in the world, with 732 deaths last year, the DOH added./PN
