BACOLOD City – Liga ng mga Barangay president Noli Villarosa contested the statement of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) director Elyvenson Plaza, claiming that all villages in this capital city are drug affected.
Plaza was at the Bacolod City Government Center last week for the launch of the “Rehabinasyon” – the national government’s comprehensive campaign against illegal drugs.
Plaza said as of February this year, 36 villages in the city were “moderately affected” by drugs while the remaining 25, “slightly affected.”
There were no “seriously affected” barangays in Bacolod, he added.
But Villarosa said, “How can they say that? They did not go to the barangays.”
Villarosa, the village chief of Barangay Tangub, said he had asked the PDEA, the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Philippine National Police to talk about the drug situation in barangays in the city.
It never happened, though, stressed Villarosa, but not further explaining why.
“Waay ko nagapati sa ila. Puro lang na sila pa ‘cute-cute.’ Akon ya seryoso nga trabaho kadtuan nila kami dapat.Paano sila kabalo kay wala man sila gapanaogs a barangay,” he added.
Villarosa said he did “everything” to clear his barangay from illegal drugs by activating the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC).
The village chief said they already helped the Bacolod City Police Office’s Police Station 8 in identifying drugs users and pushers in Barangay Tangub.
He added that they have also assisted several drug users to avail themselves of the city government’s rehabilitation program.
Meanwhile, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) warned barangays violating the law which mandates the formation of BADACs.
In a statement, PRO-6 spokesman Superintendent Gilbert Gorero said administrative cases for dereliction of duty under Section 60 of the Local Government Code of 1991 may be filed against the officials of such erring barangays.
Gorero stressed that BADACs “play [an] important role in addressing drug problem in the community because of their influence to the residents.”/PN
