SAN JOSE, Antique – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has cautioned vacationers to be extra careful when going for a swim in Antique’s beaches.
PDRRMO chief Broderick Train said they are tightly watching over popular destinations in the province to ensure that no untoward incident would happen.
Popular resorts like Nogas Island in Anini-y and Mararison Island in Culasi, among others, are teeming with local and foreign excursionists, especially this summertime, so these have to be closely watched, said Train.
He also reminded all vacationists to observe safety measures, such as wearing life vests and avoiding wading into the deeper parts of the water.
“On the average per year, we have two cases of drowning during summertime so we would like to warn the people,” Train said, adding that they have already received reports of “near-drowning incidents” from the local DRRMOs.
The local disaster teams were also instructed to closely monitor the beaches in their municipalities.
“We know that people love to go swimming, especially to cool off because of the heat,” Train said.
He added that the provincial board last year had approved the Drowning Prevention Ordinance.
A copy of which will again be disseminated to local DRRMOs, together with the directive of Gov. Rhodora Cadiao so they would coordinate with the owners of beach resorts on implementing safety measures. (With PNA/PN)
