ILOILO City – Tricycle drivers in Dingle, Iloilo stayed off the streets for some two hours on Monday.
The strike was a protest against the municipal government’s traffic rules and regulations which they deemed inimical to their livelihood.
There were an estimated 1,000 tricycles in Dingle, according to Sangguniang Bayan member Jimmy Quicoy, and he placed the number of strike participants between 70 percent to 80 percent.
The strike lasted for two hours – from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The tricycle drivers’ concerns were quickly addressed.
These concerns include the following:
* selective enforcement of traffic rules and regulations by traffic officers
* giving of special permit to motorcycles to operate like tricycles
Currently serving as officer-in-charge of Dingle, Quicoy sought a meeting with the leaders of the tricycle drivers.
Regarding the special permits issued to motorcycles in 2017, Quicoy said these only covered areas where motorcycles couldn’t go – usually far-flung areas with rough roads.
Tricycle drivers now wanted these special permits revoked. They pointed out that many rough roads were now made of concrete and passable.
Quicoy said he would be calling for meeting with all tricycle associations to discuss the matter./PN
